The Greenleaf ViewComm II System
What is ViewComm?
- “VCS” is a group of products that software engineers, field engineers, and others can use on a PC or laptop to visualize the content of an otherwise invisible stream of data packets flowing over an asynchronous serial communications link or Ethernet.
- VCS works its magic because it interacts directly with hardware. We do this with special serial drivers, and in the case of VCS Ethernet our magic is a bit different.
Is Viewcomm a piece of hardware test equipment?
- No. It’s mostly software. All the tricky, cool stuff is software.
- For asynchronous work, we ship a special set of cables.
- We strongly recommmend VCS bundles which include your choice of about 9 serial cards.
So–it’s software but there’s also hardware?
- VCS is 100% software except for the cables and bundled serial port hardware.
- If you’re testing Ethernet there’s zero hardware.
- Also zero if you’re spying on a serial port while a communications link is up on the port..
- If you need to connect to some other device, you need our cable set.
- For async faster than 115,200 use a bundled serial card: 921,600. PCI or PCMCIA. RS-232 or 422/485. No extra gizmos.
What’s this about “bundled serial port” hardware? What’s wrong with the ports on my machine?
- Nothing–if you have enough of them and they’re fast enough for you.
- Onboard and most add-on serial ports are limited to (a) 115,200 and (b) RS-232. If you need 422 or 485, you have to buy an adapter.
- Quatech and our developers collaborated on the drivers to assure you’re up and running in minutes.
- Bundled serial cards work at 921,600–matching the new HS (High Speed) models of VCS Async now shipping. They’re made by Quatech, a leader!
